May 22, 2018Sebum is oil produced under the skin due to the slow breakdown of fats. When it is not well controlled, it results in acne. Therefore there is need to control sebum production to prevent acne formation. The various methods of controlling sebum are medical control, home remedies and hygiene observation.
Medical Methods of Sebum Control Include:
Retinoid prescription
A dermatologist can provide this prescription. Retinoid is a kind of medication most prescribed for acne and excess sebum production. Retinoid can be administered orally, like Accutane, or natural topical medicines. Topical medication is the likes of tazarotene, isotretinoin, adapalene which is sold as an over the counter prescription drug. There is a likelihood of a tropical retinoid prescription before an oral one to prevent the side effects. Retinoid may have side effects of dry skin.
Androgen inhibitors
These are a medical prescription that is available for sebum control. Excess androgen hormone such as cyproterone may cause the production of excess oil. The androgen inhibitors help reduce the amount of sebum produced by the body. The medication could be tropical or oral, and one of them is Vitamin B5.
Birth control pills
The birth control pills with estrogen are prescribed for women who have excess production of sebum. The pills help reduce the skin oiliness by lowering androgens in the body. Low levels of androgen mean low levels of sebum production.
Undergoing therapy
Therapy such as light laser therapy is another procedure that may help in sebum control. This therapy works to reduce oil production from sebaceous glands. However, some of these medications can result in a light-sensitive skin. Therefore it is wise to choose either light or laser therapy and stick with it. The treatment is non-invasive and safe consequently it could be used by people who cannot use medications to treat oily skin such as pregnant women.
The Cleanness Practices For Controlling Sebum Are:
Using a gentle cleanser
The other way to control excess oil is using a gentle non-comendogenic body wash or face wash. Some of the harsh bathing soaps may cause the skin to produce more oil. The cleansing products such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid or the oil-free cleaners help dissolve oils and clean the surface. It is good to try a small amount of cleanser before using it as some of them may irritate your skin.
Warm water
Using warm water in rinsing your face and washing your face is a better way to control sebum. Hot water irritates skin and makes it produce more oil when used for bathing. To regulate this oil secretion, avoid hot water and instead use warm water.
